This month I helped Ann Marie prepare the fusing unit by cleaning the glass ferrules. I spent most of my time working on making AutoCAD and TurboCAD drawings with Alan for the backplane. This required talking a lot to Alan about what would be the best way to format the drawings. We also discussed the parts and tools needed to produce the backplane and I gave the list to Ann Marie to order.

This month the backplane drawings were finished and ready to be machined, so I started working on the parts needed for all the bending and gluing stations. Each station had about 4-5 parts that needed to be drawn. After the bending and gluing station drawings were completed, I worked on creating multiple styrofoam pieces which we can order to safely carry all the bundles down to JLab without straining the bends in the fibers. I made 3 different versions, each simpler than the previous. However, the quotes we received from the styrofoam manufacturer were too expensive and it was decided that the fibers will just be carefully packed in a box with packing peanuts.

I started working mainly on production this month. This involved learning the procedures for straightening, fusing, and painting the fiber bundles.  
'''Sept 8-14 (Total: 7 hours)-''' On Monday, I cleaned the fiber collars of the apoxy which held the ferrules in place. I also took voltage measurements of the thermistor because the LabView program needed to be modified. Wednesday I helped Ann Marie with making sure the thermistor was waterproof. I also started the drawings for the styrofoam cut-outs for when we take the fibers and microscope pieces down to JLab. Thursday I worked on the styrofoam drawing more.

Last week there was a miscommunication, and I have to create a styrofoam cut-out for the microscope all constructed. This will be done after I finish the drawings for the backplane and chimney. Thursday I talked to Alan and discussed the TurboCad drawing for the backplane. It will require multiple drawings and construction holes 0.375" dia and 6" apart. Hopefully we can find a place to split the drawing well to take advantage of the many arrays of holes.

The middle two windows are identical in length of 15" so that Alan only has to program 3 times instead of 4. I finished the drawings for window one this week. It required three separate drawings to properly and cleanly represent all of the holes. I will have to wait for Alan to come back from vacation until we can discuss the locations of the construction holes etc. Jim got me the dimensions and taps of all the holes.

I discussed with him the parts that we'll need for machining: 2 boxes of tap pieces, 1 end mill, and the aluminum. After that was finished, I worked on the AutoCAD drawings of the various parts for both the Gluing and Bending stations. I had previously worked on them so I just finished and printed. And finally on Thursday, Oct 3rd, I cut and sanded some scintillating fibers for Ann Marie to fuse, and I also broke some fibers which she had previously fused. All the information I recorded went into a Google Doc and was shared with her.

This month was spent exclusively on bundle production. I fused bundles with Keegan, measured light guides and straightened bundles.  In between fiber bundles, the unistrut for the straightening unit was sanded down by me and Jon K and was repainted using a no-rust spray paint.
